The church of St. Andrea’s
The mosaic of Saint Andreas (bottom left), also known as The First Chosen of the apostles, adorns our church wall as one enters the gates.
As one of the Twelve, Andrea’s was admitted to the closest familiarity with Our Lord during His public life; he was present at the Last Supper; beheld the risen Lord; witnessed the Ascension; shared in the graces and gifts of the first Pentecost, and helped, amid threats and persecution, to establish the Faith in Palestine. It is generally agreed that he was crucified by order of the Roman Governor, Aegeas or Aegeates, at Patrae in Achaia, and that he was bound, not nailed, to the cross, in order to prolong his sufferings. The cross on which he suffered is commonly held to have been the decussate cross, now known as the Saint Andrew Cross.
The mosaic is the work of artist Fula Paxinos. Fula is the sister of one of our original community members, the late Basil Nicolatos.
The first Holy Icon of the First-Chosen Apostle (bottom right), was brought to our church from the Holy Monastery of Saint Andrew in Rizokarpassos in the occupied part of Cyprus, by Mrs. Yianoula Palexas, wife of the Founder-Treasurer, Nicolas Palexas.
Saint Andrea’s Day is celebrated on 29 November each year with a Vespers service the previous evening and a Sunday service on the first Sunday thereafter. On this day the community holds its famous Saint Andrew’s Festival (Panigiri) at the church grounds.
